Madison is the capital of Wisconsin and the county seat of Dane County. It is also home to the University of Wisconsin–Madison. Madison's dual identity as state capital and college town gives it a cultural richness unusual in a city its size. The Madison area had a 2008 estimated population of 561,505, and is one of the fastest-growing in Wisconsin.. Madison's suburb, Middleton, was ranked the "Best Place to Live in America" in 2007 by Money Magazine. Madison is situated between four lakes, the downtown is a narrow band known as The Isthmus. With many lakes, trees and parks, it is truly a beautiful city, where many people who come to school choose to stay. Madison is progressive and vibrant. It gets cold here and many residents have a cheese obsession. With such a great city, acres of lakes, miles and miles of hiking trails; state, county and municipal parks there is an abundance of things to see and do around the area.
